The Description about the “Cube”

Kaaba is a semi -cubic building about 15 meters high and 10-12 meters wide. It is an ancient, simple structure made of granite. in the SE corner, a black meteorite (“the Black Stone”) is embedded in a silver frame. Stairs in the north side lead to a door which allows entry to the interior, which is hollow and empty.

Every year millions of Muslims travel to Mecca for the hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam. Muslims travel to Islam’s most sacred mosque al-Masjid al-Haram, during six days pilgrimage. Mecca is thought to be the place where Prophet Ismail As and his mother Siti Hajar were provided with a spring of water in the desert. As it is the most sacred place in Islam, non-Muslims are forbidden from entering.

Builded in a Sacred Black Stone meteorite that Muslims believe was placed by Prophet Ibrahim AS and Prophet Ismail As in a corner of Kaaba, a symbol of God’s covenant with Prophet Ibrahim AS and Prophet Ismail As and, by extension, with the Muslim community itself. It is embedded in the eastern corner of the Kaaba. The Ka’bah is covered with a Kiswah, a black silk cloth which is embroidered in gold with verses in the Qur’an. the Kiswah re-done and replaced once a year.

It is should be noted that Muslims do not worship the Ka’bah and its environs. Rather it serves as a focal and unifying point among the Muslims people. During daily prayers, Muslim face toward the Ka’bah from wherever they are in the world (this is known as “facing the qiblah“. (Adapted from Misnawati Andili, May 23, 2016)

Text 1

And [mention] when We made the House a place of return for the people and [a place of] security. And take, [O believers], from the standing place of Abraham a place of prayer. And We charged Abraham and Ishmael, [saying], “Purify My House for those who perform Tawaf and those who are staying [there] for worship and those who bow and prostrate [in prayer].” 2:125

Text 2

Indeed, the first House [of worship] established for mankind was that at Makkah – blessed and a guidance for the worlds. 3:96. In it are clear signs [such as] the standing place of Abraham. And whoever enters it shall be safe. And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House – for whoever is able to find thereto a way. But whoever disbelieves – then indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds.

Text 3

Allah has made the Ka’bah, the Sacred House, standing for the people and [has sanctified] the sacred months and the sacrificial animals and the garlands [by which they are identified].
